She really was! Like doing every guy in the Airplane - except Marty. He always seemed to hold a grudge against her.

Yeah, he actually disliked her. I attribute it to the fact that when Grace joined the Airplane, she overshadowed him as the face of the band once Somebody to Love and White Rabbit put the Airplane on the map. His dislike of her continued for quite some time. I recall a quote from the 70s where he says some pretty unflattering things about Grace, lol.

Ah so he was jealous of her bc he couldn't stand out as much as her! I get it.
Well, there are usually some conflicts in many bands (like Fleetwood Mac and Pink Floyd etc). That's why he continued on and off relationship with the band, I suppose?

Yeah, it was pretty much jealousy. He was with some of the members on and off. He left the Airplane in 1971, then rejoined Paul Kantner and Grace for Jefferson Starship in 1973/74. He left that some years later, but rejoined Paul and Jack Casady to form the KBC Band sometime in the 80s I believe.

I know he released his solo album in the early 80's. I like "Hearts."
It's quite famous here.

I saw one of his solo albums on vinyl a year or two ago. Kinda wish I picked it up, but I didn't have a record player yet at the time.

I don't have his solo albums either. Vinyls are so good. Though I don't have one, someday I want to buy! I don't know why but Marty Balin's "Hearts" was used in TV commercials so lots of people know that here. And I don't know why there is only a few people who know Jefferson Airplane here.

It was pretty lonely for me being the only person who seemed to know Jefferson Airplane in my high school. Thank goodness for the Internet!

Omg I thought so many young teens like you know Jefferson Airplane there! It is surprising.
In Japan, people who lived through the 60's know Jefferson Airplane. And I know some classmates who like The Queen, Bon Jovi, Led Zeppelin and Eagles, but they don't know Jefferson Airplane, Pink Floyd, The Doors... It is not that I don't like The Queen, Bon Jovi and The Eagles. But I guess I've already been through this phase and becoming a classic rock nerd...lol

I recall seeing three kids wearing Doors, Grateful Dead, and Led Zeppelin shirts at my high school, and one girl in a lower grade that had Jim Morrison in his Joel Brodsky "young lion" pose drawn surprisingly well on her backpack. An acquaintance of mine even gave me a Jim Morrison button when she came back from a vacation in Venice Beach, lol. I liked to wear it on my shirts. But even so the only person at school that knew Jefferson Airplane was my history teacher. And most likely my baby boomer government teacher, but I never asked. I guess it breaks breaks down to the most known in classic rock. Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Queen, the Eagles, Grateful Dead, etc... nearly everyone knows even if they aren't a classic rock fan. Some like the Doors, the Kinks, etc. are a little below. And Jefferson Airplane is below that....

Wow, that's great! I have The Doors T-Shirt bought at H&M lol. And then I thought they were so famous in foreign countries. Even if I wear it here, nobody notices it. lol I want that Jim Morrison's button!
I don't think most of the Japanese even hear of the name of the Grateful Dead, much less Jefferson Airplane. So naturally they didn't take a tour here. (But some members came here as a solo artist)
And btw one of my professors said Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead and Canned Heat are big in the UK (he is a British and baby boomer!). He also complained only the Eagles, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones are popular here. I couldn't agree with him more.
He was an enormous Incredible String Band fan btw lol.
